Update of Emission Factors for Carbon Footprint Calculation

The emission factors for the calculation of the carbon footprint, as every year, have been updated by the Spanish Climate Change Office. Last Friday, 10 May, the new data were shared, which are essential to understand and calculate the carbon footprint of our activities and to take effective measures to mitigate climate change.

This update is based on the latest data provided by the Spanish Inventory System team and the information collected in the National Greenhouse Gas Inventory, covering the period from 1990 to 2022. In addition, the findings of the Supplementary Material to Chapter 7 of the Sixth Assessment Report of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) have been taken into account, leading to significant adjustments, especially for the main Greenhouse Gases (GHGs).

What are the updates to the emission factors for the carbon footprint calculation?

  • Modification of GWP values: The Global Warming Potential (GWP) values have been adjusted based on IPCC data, reflecting a more accurate understanding of their impact on climate change.
  • Addition of new categories and fuels: Several modifications have been introduced, such as the inclusion of diesel A and petrol in the stationary installations category, as well as the disaggregation of emission factors for vehicles and machinery, including LNG fuel for trucks, AdBlue additive for diesel vehicles and lubricants for machinery.
  • Updated calculation methodologies: Adjustments have been made to the calculation criteria and methodologies to more accurately reflect greenhouse gas emissions.

This new version, identified as V3 and published on 9 May 2024, represents a significant step towards a more accurate and detailed assessment of our GHG emissions. Our team is working hard to update all the tools necessary to implement these changes and make the calculations for 2023.
