Differences between carbon footprint calculation, validation and verification

When we talk about carbon footprinting, the concepts of calculation, validation and verification are concepts related to the different steps to be followed in the process of assessing and ensuring the accuracy of carbon footprint information. So what is the difference between these concepts?

STEP 1: Calculating the carbon footprint

When calculating the carbon footprint, we determine the total amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with an activity, product, organisation or individual. These emissions come from activities such as production, energy consumption, transportation throughout the supply chain, and employee commuting, among others. Calculating the carbon footprint of your organisation offers multiple benefits. At Grup Carles we can provide you with a customised roadmap to measure, manage and, consequently, reduce your company's carbon emissions.

STEP 2: Carbon footprint validation

Carbon footprint validation refers to the confirmation that the necessary requirements for a specific future use or application have been met by providing objective evidence (plausibility confirmation). At this stage, it is essential to review and verify that the data sources, methodologies and assumptions used in the emissions calculation are adequate and reliable, thus ensuring that the calculation is based on sound and credible information.

STEP 3: Verification of the carbon footprint

By providing objective evidence, we can confirm the claim that the specified requirements have been met (confirmation of veracity), and this is the verification of the carbon footprint.

This assessment is independent, and serves to confirm whether the data reported in the carbon footprint accurately represents the actual emissions. An external verifier reviews the organisation's or project's emissions calculations and documents provided to confirm their accuracy. This adds further credibility and confidence to the reported data. Once your footprint has been independently verified, it will be considered reliable, so this step becomes very important if you need to share your data in a meaningful way.

At Grup Carles we are committed to helping you calculate and reduce your carbon footprint effectively to contribute to a more sustainable future. Our team of experts is able to offer you effective and customised solutions for managing your carbon footprint.
