What rental subsidies are available and how to apply for them?

The Spanish government has recently approved a new rental price index that will come into force in the next few days. In addition to this regulation, the administrations offer several subsidies for housing payments. In this article, we will detail the rental subsidies for 2024 in Catalonia, as well as the requirements to apply for them.
The rental price index and its implementation
With the aim of mitigating the escalation of rental prices, the Spanish government has approved a new rental price index, which will come into force in the coming weeks. This measure aims to keep rental prices at more affordable levels for the population.
Rental subsidies for 2024 in Barcelona and Catalonia
Subsidy for young people up to 35 years old
The Generalitat de Catalunya offers rent subsidies of up to 250 euros for young people aged 35 and under. To apply for this subsidy, the following criteria are required:
- Be registered in the dwelling before the publication of the call for applications.
- Pay a rent of less than 950 euros (Barcelona and metropolitan area) or 450 euros (room).
- Be up to date with rent payments.
- Income of less than €24,301.58 (3.05 times the sufficiency income indicator for the year 2022).
The deadline for this subsidy is from 11 March at 9:00 am to 12 April at 3:00 pm.
Rental subsidies for the over 65s
People over 65 years of age are eligible for a rent subsidy of up to 200 euros. To apply for this subsidy, the following criteria are required:
- Be 65 years of age or older at the time of the call for applications.
- Be registered in the dwelling prior to the call for applications.
- Pay a rent of less than 900 euros (flats) or 450 euros (room).
- Income equal to or less than 24,301.57 euros per year (3.05 times the sufficiency income indicator).
The deadline for applying for this aid is from 27 February to 27 March at 15:00h.
